Why Process Safety Competency Still Gets Missed - And What We’re Doing About It

Over the years, one thing has become consistently clear to me: most organisations care deeply about process safety, but far fewer have a clear, structured way of building and maintaining real competency across their teams.

It's rarely a lack of commitment. It’s the reality of scale, competing priorities, and the complexity of modern operations.

I’ve worked with organisations that have robust systems, comprehensive procedures, and committed leadership teams, yet when you look closer, there’s often uncertainty around capability. Not just “has training been completed?” but “do our people truly understand the risks they are managing day to day?”

That gap between training and true competency is where process safety risk quietly sits.

The challenge we keep seeing

Across industry, a few common themes come up time and again:

  • Learning is delivered, but not always reinforced over time
  • Different parts of the organisation operate with different levels of understanding
  • Leaders have limited visibility of capability across their teams
  • Competency development is often reactive rather than structured
  • Managing and tracking learning places a significant administrative burden on internal resources

In many cases, organisations are doing a lot of the right things. The challenge is bringing those efforts together into a connected approach that develops, maintains, and measures competency across the business. Process safety requires ongoing understanding, reinforcement, and accountability at every level of an organisation.

 What we’ve built in response

Our corporate e-learning packages were developed to address these challenges directly. Rather than providing standalone training, we deliver a structured competency solution that combines learning, leadership development, support, and reporting.

This includes:

  • Structured, industry-relevant e-learning that builds practical process safety understanding across the workforce
  • Face-to-face leadership and executive training focused on risk-informed decision-making and governance
  • In-person training and workshops where deeper discussion and application add value
  • Ongoing mentoring and advisory support to connect learning with operational realities
  • Monthly competency reporting and insights that provide visibility of engagement, progress, and emerging capability needs

The reporting component is particularly valuable, giving organisations a clearer picture of how capability is developing across teams and where additional focus may be required.

 Why this matters?

From my perspective, good process safety competency isn’t about ticking a box, it’s about confidence.

Confidence that:

  • Your people understand the risks they are managing
  • Your leaders are making informed decisions
  • Capability is being developed consistently across the organisation
  • Emerging gaps can be identified and addressed early

Without that, even well-designed systems can be undermined. With it, organisations are far better positioned to manage major hazards effectively.

Delivering process safety competency at scale

Our corporate e-learning packages provide organisations with a practical and sustainable way to strengthen capability across the entire workforce.

By integrating e-learning, leadership development, in-person engagement, mentoring, and reporting into a single programme, organisations benefit from:

  • A consistent approach to competency development
  • Visibility of progress and engagement across teams
  • Structured learning pathways that support continual improvement
  • Reduced administrative effort for internal teams
  • Better alignment between learning and operational risk

Most importantly, organisations gain clarity around capability, where strengths exist, where support is needed, and how competency is improving over time.

 Final thoughts

Every organisation is on a journey with process safety. There’s no perfect endpoint, and there are always opportunities to strengthen capability.

Having worked alongside many teams over the years, I've found that the organisations achieving the greatest improvements are those that actively seek clarity: understanding what their people know, where capability gaps exist, and what needs to improve.

Our goal is to make that process simpler, more visible, and easier to sustain, helping organisations turn process safety intentions into lasting organisational capability.
